Most people tend to forget about desserts due to a lack of time, or believing they are too hard to make. This is a crying shame as with a little bit of guidance you can whip up the most delicious homemade desserts in a matter of minutes. Below you will find a couple of quick and easy recipe ideas to help get you started.
Crème brûlée
A real classic, crème brûlée can make many novice cooks a little wary; however, follow this simple recipe and you'll be wowing your friends and family in no time.
Ingredients:
Four cups of cream
Six egg yolks
One tsp of fresh vanilla
Half a cup of sugar
Method:
First, you need to preheat your oven to 300 degrees C. Next, get yourself a pan and pour in the cream, mixing in the vanilla, allowing it to simmer on the hob. Once sufficiently simmered, remove from the heat and cool for around 10 minutes. While it is cooling, get beating those egg yolks and sugar until you see a nice and creamy consistency. Now, pour the cooled cream into the egg mixture, beating it gently as you pour. Once it is all mixed in, pour the mixture into ramekins and place them in a baking dish. Boil the kettle and then pour the hot water into the baking tray, letting it cover half way up the ramekins (creating a bain marie). Next, pop your baking tray into the oven and wait around 30 minutes. Remove your desserts and let them cool in the fridge for a couple of hours. When you are ready to serve, simply sprinkle some sugar on the top (blow torches are only for the brave and experienced), and you're ready to dig in.
Eton mess
This classic British dessert has become more and more popular and it is easy to see why. One of the most simple to put together, it looks and tastes divine.
Ingredients:
One lb/450g strawberries
Six to eight meringues or meringue nests
Half a pint (280ml) of double cream
Half a pint (280ml) of plain or Greek yogurt
Method:
Start by slicing those juicy strawberries in half. Next, get the meringues, or meringue nests, and crumble them up; you can do this with your hands or a rolling pin. When this is all prepared, get the cream and whip it into soft peaks; once this is achieved add some yogurt. Now for the final bit; mix the cream and yoghurt in with the strawberries and broken meringues. Once mixed serve in dessert glasses and enjoy!
