Ballyclare High School pupils (l-r) Claire Forsythe and Megan Johnston pick up information from Gillian Bonner at the Queen’s Sport stall during the University’s Open Days.
DID you know that 2008 is the official year of the potato? To mark the occasion Newtownabbey Borough Council is holding a Potato Festival at Sentry Hill Historic House and Visitor Centre on Saturday 20 September. The festival will run from 1pm-6pm and will be filled with plenty of fun activities, so the whole family can come along and re-discover the potato!
For creative ideas on how to use potatoes there will be cookery demonstrations, showing some of the many ways to incorporate potatoes into daily dishes. Alongside this, there will be potato tasting which promises to tempt your appetite and revive your taste buds. Don't miss the free barbeque which will take place at 1pm!
Kids will love the chance to 'get stuck in' and dig their own potatoes. They are also encouraged to bring along an entry for the 'odd spud' competition, where the most strangely shaped potato on the day will pick up a prize. The teddy bears' picnic, arts and crafts, music and dance, bouncy castles, face painting and much more will make this a fun day for everyone.
The Potato Festival is a great way to enjoy the weekend, and will have everyone thinking about how they can enjoy the versatile potato as part of their diet. For further details contact Jo Colville, Community Development Assistant, 028 9034 0209 or visit www.newtownabbey.gov.uk
