Jogger stabs woman in park
Thursday, 12 January 2012
A WOMAN was stabbed in broad daylight on Monday as she walked in Sixmilewater Park.
The woman was walking in the direction of the Templepatrick Road when a male jogger bumped into her.
It was after this contact that the woman felt abdominal pains and realised she had been stabbed.
The incident happened in broad daylight, sometime between 12pm and 1pm on January 9.
A police spokesperson said: "The victim attended a nearby hospital for treatment to her injuries that are described as not life-threatening.
“The male is described as being approximately 5ft 5in tall, of a medium build and wearing a black hooded top, dark clothing and a blue scarf up around his face partially covering it."
Ballyclare Alliance Councillor Pat McCudden said he was "absolutely disgusted" to hear of the attack.
He added: "I just can't believe that something like this would happen in broad daylight.
“So many people use the local parks for pleasure. Sixmilewater Park in particular is normally filled with people walking their dogs and jogging.
“It is one of the town's assets and it is terrible that the victim's safety was compromised in the park.
“The level of crime in Ballyclare seems to be on the up, with this incident following the serious arson attack on Clare Farm Supplies.
“I would appeal to everyone to keep their eyes and ears open and report any suspicious activity to the police."
The stabbing comes a few months after Newtownabbey Borough Council started a new campaign to encourage residents to use Sixmilewater Park more.
Last October the park was included in a new Love My Park Scheme, which saw local people encouraged by park wardens to volunteer to help create a safe environment in parks across Newtownabbey.
Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who observed a male matching this description in the area is asked to contact Newtownabbey CID on 0845 600 8000.
Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
