Ballyclare High to host careers convention

Thursday, 26 January 2012

BALLYCLARE High School and Ballyclare Secondary School, working together as the 'Ballyclare Learning Community', are hosting a Careers Convention on Thursday 26th January from 5.30 - 9.30pm.
The event, which will include information stands in two of Ballyclare High School's (BHS) main halls and almost 30 careers presentations, is directed at Year 10 pupils who are about to make their GCSE choices and Year 12 pupils who are considering their options at A level.
Julie Richardson, Head of Careers and event organiser, explained: "Choosing subjects at GCSE or 'A' level is an extremely important decision in a young person's life. The door to certain careers will be closed if the incorrect subjects are dropped at one of these key transition points.
“BHS and Ballyclare Secondary are working together to ensure that our pupils are informed about all the options open to them. In addition to on-going careers guidance in both schools, this event will provide students with the opportunity to talk to university representatives about the choices they are considering making as well as the application process. They will also have the chance to speak to employers and individual professionals who may be looking for particular skill-sets and qualifications.
“We hope that both schools' pupils and their parents recognise the importance of this convention. Students or parents with questions will be able to seek answers from the relevant people. They will then be better equipped to make subject choices - a decision that could affect pupils' future careers."
Presentations from varying sectors of industry will be made during the evening, including medicine, journalism, dentistry, law, architecture, finance, hospitality and tourism and engineering.
Mrs Richardson continued: "We are delighted that so many leading companies and organisations have agreed to speak or exhibit at the convention. The BBC and UTV will both be at the event to discuss careers available in the media and several local MLAs will be speaking about potential careers in politics.
“Queen's University and the University of Ulster as well as Aberdeen University, Dublin City University and Liverpool John Moores University are just some of the universities that will be represented.
“Global-reaching companies such as Bombardier Aerospace, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, FG Wilson and Chain Reaction Cycles will be attending, as will the Armed Forces and local representatives from the Fire Bridgade. We are especially pleased to have Dr Norman Apsley, director of the Northern Ireland Science Park in Belfast's Titanic Quarter in attendance to speak about the wide range of hi-tech STEM related careers in the Park."
The focus for Year 10 pupils will be from 5.30 - 7.30pm at the event and Year 12 should attend from 7.30 - 9.30pm.
