A REQUEST for 'major refurbishment and an extension' at Ballyclare High school, has been made. An economic appraisal has been carried out and 3 proposals have been put forward, however a final decision on which proposal has not been made.
A source told the Gazette that there is a possibility of a section of the school being knocked town and rebuilt.
Principal Mr Knox said most of the school was modern and does not require any refurbishment, however there are areas he would like to see developed, he said: "In the last four years the school has had some new facilities built, such as a new library.
“For instance the school needs a new technology suite to replace the existing department."
The front buildings at the school are the best part of a century old and in recent years the school has undergone some extensive building work.
Mr Knox was quick to point out that any refurbishment or redevelopment would take into consideration the sentimental value of some of the school's older buildings, he added: "Any work carried out would take into account the importance of the school's illustrious history. However plans are in the earliest of stages and no final decision has been made."
A spokesperson for the NEELB told the Gazette that the school have put in a request, recommending an extension and refurbishment of the building. The process is in the very early stages and they confirmed that so far no design work has been completed and no detailed plans have been drawn up.
