The home of 68 year old Ronald Smyth, currently awaiting sentence after admitting indecent assault, was attacked last Tuesday. The house was seriously damaged by fire when a petrol bomb was thrown threw the window.
The attackers also threw paint bombs at the house.
It is believed that Mr Smyth suffered minor burns and cuts to his hands in the incident.
The town had been shocked to discover that popular former shopkeeper was charged with abusing a nine year old girl. Mr Smyth was warned by the judge that because of the nature of the charges a prison sentence would be "almost inevitable."
Smyth was well known in the town as he ran a confectionery store in the Ollardale Drive area for a number of years. Speaking to the Gazette about the petrol and paint bomb attack, DPP Chairman Councillor Tom Campbell said: "We can be very thankful that this attack has not resulted in more serious injury. One can but only imagine the potential serious consequences of petrol bombing a house with people inside."
He added, "This type of behaviour has no place in any civilised society let alone a quite residential area in Ballyclare." Shortly after the attack two men were arrested, A 19 year old and a 20 year old they have been released on bail pending further enquiries.
