RESIDENTS in Doagh have held a demonstration against drug problems in the area.
On Friday night, Doagh Residents association, supported by Ballyclare and Somme Association, held a demonstration regarding the problems with drug dealers in the Anderson Park area. The association felt the action was necessary following a number of incidents in the area and believed the protest would raise awareness of the problem.
A catalogue of events that have happened in Anderson Park over recent months was handed over to representatives of the PSNI. The Association also passed on this list of alleged events over recent months to the Gazette. UUP Councillor Jim Bingham was at the demonstration, speaking to the Gazette he said: "After a number of incidents the residents thought this would be the best course of action. The residents have been concerned with the area becoming a haven for drug dealers and they want it to stop.
“This list shows there is a significant problem in the area that needs to be addressed. The security door of the flats has been kicked in on numerous occasions to gain access for parties, two, sometimes three times a week.
“I am hearing about tenants living nearby being forced to sleep elsewhere due to the constant noise.
“A young girl was left traumatised after she disturbed a burglar in her house who claimed he a mistakenly walked into the wrong house. One of the flats has already been broken into and various valuables stolen.
“Cars have been stolen and vandalised. Windows have been broken and graffiti has appeared on walls, the Doagh residence association believe this upsurge in anti social behaviour is down to the drug dealers.
“They have also handed over this list to the Housing Executive. The situation is getting out of hand and the residents have organised this with meeting with the Police to make it known that they won't stand for it.
They have called for action to stop this problem and keep drug dealers out of the area."
Jim told the Gazette that he was pleased with the response he got from the representatives from the PSNI. "They offered encouragement that they are going to be very pro active in their response to the communities concerns."
“On the page submitted o the Gazette the message from the residents is clear: "Drug Dealers Out"
Meanwhile in a separate incident a 28 year old woman has been charged with possession of a class A drug with intent to supply. She is expected to appear at Laganside Magistrates Court later this month. However the Police spokesperson advised this is not connected to the protest held by residents.
