A LANDMARK in Ballyeaston may be removed, but not without a fight says one councillor.
The red phone box that has stood in the town for years may be removed by BT as they finalise plans to remove all old style phone boxes across the country.
The village has recently achieved the runner-up spot in Best kept Village awards in the small villages category. The phone box is the last K2 design in the borough.
The K2 design was launched after a competition open to the public to send in their designs. Councillor Paul Girven believes that Ballyeaston is fortunate to have this piece of history and most importantly the box is still in use.
“This is unique to the borough, Straid had one of these old phone boxes and it was replaced by one of he modern boxes that have no character.
“The current box provides a necessity to the community of Ballyeaston, not everyone has mobile phones. There is a still a need to provide this vital service to the village. However the current box needs a replacement light which needs to be addressed."
