Comfortable win for Kilroot

KILROOT REC 3.
NEWTOWNBREDA 0.
ODDLY enough on a day when only one Irish League match survived, the much maligned Beltoy Playing Fields was adjudged by referee Jim Holden to be playable, much to the annoyance of Kilroot Rec's Junior Shield opponents, 2A stablemates Newtownbreda.
Kilroot had the better of a scoreless first half and should have taken advantage, but chance after chance went a begging, with Andrew Dummigan, John McFetridge, David Kidd and Andrew Benson the main culprits.
Their waywardness, too, could have proved costly just one minute from the break when the onrushing Breda
midfielder screwed
the ball wide of a gaping net.
Rec, nevertheless, couldn't run that same risk in the second session, finally making the breakthrough courtesy of McFetridge, set up nicely by Dummigan.
Kilroot established a safety valve when Kidd was on hand, after the keeper had spilled McFetridge's initial drive. Rec wrapped it all up when man of the match McFetridge went down inside the box; Jamie Stirling sending the keeper the wrong way from the spot.
Next Saturday, it's back to the league and an East Antrim derby at Foundry Lane Ballyclare against neighbours Grange Rangers.
Kilroot Rec; Priestly; Braiden, Stirling, McKee, B Meek - Simon Hamilton (Cooper), Armstrong, Benson, McFetridge - Dummigan (Bell), Kidd (Ross).
