2009 - A Successful Year at Ballyclare Golf Club
Wednesday, 13 January 2010
THE PAST year must rate as one of the best ever for Ballyclare Golf Club. It could rate alongside 2004 when the club won the Senior Cup at Ulster and all-Ireland level for the first and only time.
This season the club has won the Holt Shield for the first time. Captain Norman Reid led his team to victory over Dunmurry in a close two-leg final.
In the Belfast and District Cup the low handicappers under Colin Steele and Gareth Prior did well to reach the final but lost - again to Dunmurry.
Earlier in the season Max McConnell took the team to the final (Ulster) of the Pierce Purcell Shiled at Rockmount where they lost by the narrowest of margins to Letterkenny who went on to the all-Ireland title.
The Ballyclare team led by Jim Buchanan got to the semi-final of the Ulster Cup before going out narrowly to 2008 winners Mannan Castle.
But the real success story has been the superb results by Gareth Maybin on European Tour and his achievements of getting to Dubai and doing so well. He has now won well over 750,000 Dollars on the Tour and a week ago in the Dunhill Championships at Matelane in South Africa, finished equal fourth on 11 under par (276) to collect 38,000 Euros and again be the best Irish Pro in the event. This now gives him 7 top ten finishes in 2009 - a wonderful achievement.
