LOCAL heavyweight Robert 'Partyboy' McTrustry done his town proud during the recent cage contender event held in Carrickfergus' Clarion Hotel. The event billed a 8 man cage competition with Robert fighting on the undercard.
This was his first transition into the cage from previously fighting for the N.Ireland ju jutsu team and the Northern Ireland taiho jutsu squad.
Training out of Ballyclare's taiho jutsu gym with Hamill, Hall and big brother Paul McTrustry. This is the new begining for the re established gym.
For the last 13 years the instructors have been training in multiple martial arts, but more recently the instructors have been cross training with the top tai, mma, and Brazillian instructors in the country to establish their club as a new mixed martial arts gym.
The club has had greatly appreciated help from Davy Patterson's gym in Antrim, Grahams Brazillian ju jutsu in the Valley Leisure Centre, Frankie McCrum's muai tai in Belfast, and Alan McKee's ju jutsu in Islandmagee, the taiho mma club in Ballyclare is evolving quickly.
Robert McTrustry's first heavy weight fight was simply electric. Gaining the fastest knock out of the evening. As he entered the cage the young McTrustry faced a MMA fighter from Poland with good cross training, specialising in tai kickboxing. The 80 plus local crowd who had travelled to support Robert went wild in the immediate area.
As the referee checked their gloves everyone could see that McTrustry was the most highly focused man in the room. Sending the two gladiators back to their corners McTrustry had a last minute word with his corner team, Hamill, McTrustry and Moore.
The bell sounded, Robert had already began to steam across the cage, ensuring he dominated as much space as possible, first came the thunder front kick to push his opponent back into the cage wall, next an onslaught of punishing blows to the fighters head and body, as he began to fold a excruiating knee from McTrustry came up to end the mans event. The referee jumped in to stop the bout 12 seconds after it had begun to a standing ovation from his support.
Robert was then interviewed by several tv channels about his display and intentions for the future. His immediate response was to commend his opponent and then live up to his fight name, Robert 'Partyboy' McTrustry.
