Ballyclare Ladies grab their first win

A KAREN Dixon double secured the first win of the season for the Ballyclare Ladies senior side. This Senior League Section 1 basement battle was played in Kilkeel, where the locals scored first, but finished losers by the odd goal in three.
After the long journey to South Down, the Ballyclare girls were rocked by a home goal after only two minutes, but they were back on level terms midway through the first half, when Karen Dixon rattled the backboard from a penalty corner.
Play switched from end to end in an evenly contested match, with each side forcing a few penalty corners, and the 1-1 score at the interval was a fair reflection of play.
during the second session goalkeeper Vikki Robinson had to be at her best on several occasions during a spell of concerted Kilkeel attacking, but with Caroline McGookin, Gillian McMaw, Lorraine Ashcroft and team captain Nikki Kempton defending robustly, the home sharpshooters were thwarted.
The match seemed to be heading for a draw until Karen Dixon netted from another penalty corner four minutes from time, to secure the much needed league win.
The result means that Ballyclare and Kilkeel are now level with four points each at the foot of the table, where Omagh Ladies with six, are the other side with relegation fears.

This weekend the 'Clare girls face a more difficult assignment when they entertain promotion hopefuls, Cookstown, at Foundry Lane where league points will be at stake.
The 2nd and 3rd XIs had no games on Saturday, but this weekend both are in action in knockout competitions, with Janice Wilson's 2nd XI at home to Priorians II in the Qualifying Plate, while Miriam Weatherup's 3rd XI entertain Greenisland III in the Junior Plate.
